Symptoms from the genitals and organs that form the urinary tract are
generally more annoying than life threatening. One exception to this is
infections that involve the kidneys. These can lead to generalized infection
or sepsis. Infections that involve the fallopian tubes can also lead to
intra-abdominal abscesses.
The structures involved with the urinary tract, both directly and indirectly,
include the kidney, the adrenal gland, the ureters, the urinary bladder
and the urethra. Some of these organs also participate in sexual or reproductive
function. The vagina, uterus, fallopian tubes and ovaries are utilized
for pregnancy and birth. The penis, scrotum, testicles, prostate and other
glands, are used for reproductive purposes.
Painful urination, blood in the urine, difficulty urinating and the inability
to urinate are a few of the symptoms that may occur.
Medical conditions can prevent the ejaculation of semen and block the
passages in the women for the egg to pass from the ovary to the uterus.
Problems with pregnancy can be treated with various forms of artificial
insemination or in vitro fertilization. Erectile dysfunction
in men has numerous causes. Some of these can be treated with drugs such
as Viagra or Cialis.
Loss of interest in sex can be psychological or physical. It is almost
always associated with depression and frequently with hormonal imbalance.
Hormone replacement and antidepressants have been used to
treat menopausal symptoms. Some of these drugs include Wellbutrin,
Prozac, Paxil and Zoloft.
Hormone replacement has been linked with various forms of uterine
or cervical cancer. Abnormalities of some hormones in the genital
region can lead to hair loss or excessive hair and acne
Uterine problems in women and prostate problems in men can produce back
pain. Severe back and flank pain may also come from kidney stones
and infections of the kidney and urinary tract. Ovarian
failure and menopause have both been linked to osteoporosis.
These can lead to compression fractures of the spine and back
pain.
