The initial episode of shoulder dislocation is traumatic in origin and accompanied by severe pain. There is asymmetry of the shoulders. There is restricted movement of the shoulder joint. Subsequent episodes of dislocation can be painless, due to disruption of the tendons and ligaments that secure the shoulder.
