Diabetic Retinopathy

Overview of Diabetic Retinopathy

overview

People with diabetes can develop abnormalities of the small blood vessels anywhere in the body. When it involves the small blood vessels in the back of the eye, in the retina, it produces diabetic retinopathy. Initially, these small blood vessels may leak. Later, new blood vessels grow out in to the vitreous humor or jelly-like material that fills the eyeball. Bleeding may occur from these vessels. Progressive loss of vision or blindness may occur. This process usually occurs in people who have had diabetes for many years. It is somewhat more likely to occur in people who have not controlled their diabetes well with medication.

Causes of Diabetic Retinopathy

causes

Visual loss from diabetic retinopathy usually is secondary to bleeding. This can result in detachment of the retina or bleeding within the vitreous humor. Surgery may be employed to destroy these new blood vessels and present the detachment of the retina.

Signs and Symptoms of Diabetic Retinopathy

signs and symptoms

Blurry vision may occur in certain fields of vision. Rupture of one of the fragile new blood vessels may lead to sudden loss of vision in one eye.
