Bleeding occurring around the eyes is usually of sudden onset. There is local swelling and bruising. Depending on the extent of the hemorrhage, there may be visual loss secondary to compression of the optic nerve.

Hemorrhage in the orbit usually comes from rupture of an orbital vein. Orbital tumors can hemorrhage. Severe hypertension can occasionally lead to periorbital hematoma. Straining in labor and disorder of the coagulation system can also lead to orbital hemorrhage and hematoma.

Signs and Symptoms of Orbital Hematoma

Sudden pressure and pain occur in the eye with orbital hemorrhage. Bulging of the eye may occur. When this is significant, it will slightly change the alignment of the eyes and lead to double vision. Drooping of the eyelid may occur. Blurred or double vision may develop. Nausea, vomiting and bruising around the eye occurs. When the disorder is severe, there may be prominent visual loss.
