A laryngocele is a sack that develops in the region of the vocal cords. They are filled with air. The laryngocele can stay within the overlying thyroid cartilage or can expand beyond it. They are most common in middle aged males and usually occur on only one side.

Laryngoceles are thought to be caused by increased pressure in that portion of the airway between the true and false vocal cords.

Signs and Symptoms of Laryngocoele

Laryngoceles can be detected clinically when they produce a lump in the neck. They lump may vary in size. Straining and coughing may cause the lump to increase in size. There may be hoarseness, cough and stridor. Difficulty swallowing may occur. Occasionally, the laryngocele cavity can collect bacteria and develop an abscess.
