Lymphadenopathy

Overview of Lymphadenopathy

overview

Lymphadenopathy refers to a condition in which the lymph nodes become enlarged. This may affect one lymph node, or may involve all the lymph nodes of the body. This response is most commonly the result of infection, either acute or chronic. It may also occur in certain forms of cancer, particularly those that affect the bone marrow and blood elements.

Causes of Lymphadenopathy

causes

Acute infections cause swollen lymph nodes. Chronic infections, such as might occur with
AIDS and tuberculosis, also frequently lead to lymphadenopathy. Most forms of cancer may metastasize or spread to lymph nodes leading to their enlargement.

Signs and Symptoms of Lymphadenopathy

signs and symptoms

Lymph nodes, usually in the neck, the armpit or the groin, may become enlarged. This enlargement may be painful or painless, depending on the underlying disease. Lymph nodes may also become enlarged in the chest and abdomen, as might be seen on x-ray, CT or MRI scans.
