Rib Fracture

Overview of Rib Fracture

overview

Rib fractures commonly occur after blunt trauma to the chest. They may also occur when the ribs are weakened or damaged from cancer or osteoporosis. If the underlying lung is injured, a pneumothorax may develop. In this situation, or when there are multiple rib fractures, there is often shortness of breath and difficulty breathing.

Causes of Rib Fracture

causes

Rib fractures are most commonly the result of blunt trauma. Osteoporosis and cancer can produce pathological fractures of the ribs that occur spontaneously or with minimal trauma.

Signs and Symptoms of Rib Fracture

signs and symptoms

Chest pain is probably the most common symptom of rib fracture. Pain often increases with inspiration, coughing or change of position. Local tenderness and bruising occurs. If a pneuomothorax occurs, there may be air in the tissues underneath the skin. Shortness of breath frequently occurs. Pathological fractures occur with a history of cancer or osteoporosis. Other bones may be similarly affected.
