Decreased Libido, Decreased Sex Drive

Overview of Decreased Libido, Decreased Sex Drive

overview

When the sex drive is decreased, there is little reward or reinforcement for sexual activities. While temporary loss of sex drive, or libido, is common, a prolonged loss of interest may cause severe problems. The urge for sex is partly regulated by sex hormones, particularly testosterone. Although some decline in sex is common with increasing age, it varies widely from individual to individual. Testosterone levels may fall in both men and women. This can be one of the primary causes for loss of sex drive.

Causes of Decreased Libido, Decreased Sex Drive

causes

Menopausal women are commonly affected. Along with decreased or changing levels of estrogen, there is often a decrease in the levels of testosterone. Disease or tumors of the pituitary gland can affect the regulation of the production of testosterone. Disease of the testicles or removal of the testicles to help combat some forms of cancer leads to decreased levels of testosterone. Psychological and interpersonal stresses are common causes of decreased sex drive. Certain medications, including certain oral contraceptives, some blood pressure medications, some antidepressants and heavy use of alcohol are all potentially inhibitors of sex drive.

Signs and Symptoms of Decreased Libido, Decreased Sex Drive
