Intertrigo is primarily produced by mechanical forces. Subsequent to this, chronic infection occurs, confined to areas of the skin that are in close contact with one another. Heat and moisture leads to maceration or breakdown of the skin. The areas which are most prone to develop this disorder include the groin, armpit, space between the toes, in chubby infants and underneath large breasts.
Causes of Intertigo
Chronic irritation and exposure to moisture leads to maceration of the skin. Secondary overgrowth of superficial bacteria of the skin then occurs.
Signs and Symptoms of Intertigo
The symptoms of intertrigo include red, macerated tissue. They become increasingly red and may have a significant odor. Secondary infection may occur with pus, ulceration or abscess. Scaling between the toes suggests fungal infection.
