Carotid Sinus Syndrome

Overview of Carotid Sinus Syndrome

The carotid sinus allows the brain to respond to increased blood pressure. Stretching of these fibers, which are located where the carotid artery divides in the neck, causes the brain to respond and slow the heart rate and lower the blood pressure. At times, the sinus is too sensitive. Mild stretching or compression of the carotid sinus may affect the heart rate and blood pressure.
