Renal cortical abscess usually occurs when bacteria spread through the blood are deposited and grow in the kidney. They infections are most common with staphylococcus. They produce severe kidney infections that may damage or destroy the kidney.

Hematogenous spread of bacteria from another site to the kidney is the most common cause. Trauma to the kidney as well as diabetes are risk factors for developing renal abscess.

Signs and Symptoms of Renal Cortical Abscess

Renal cortical abscess often is associated with severe low back and flank pain. As the mass enlarges, a mass may be felt in the flank. There is fever, chills and prostration. Due to the fact these infections are often secondary, there may be symptoms of infections of the skin, the bone or heart valves.
