Tuberous Sclerosis is also known as Bourneville's disease. It is a hereditary disease in which a variety of abnormalities affect the skin, nervous system, kidney and other organs. The hallmark of the disease is adenoma sebaceum, epilepsy and mental retardation.

Causes of Tuberous Sclerosis

The disease is hereditary. The chromosomes, themselves, appear normal. The cause is unknown.

Signs and Symptoms of Tuberous Sclerosis

The symptoms which often attract attention to the person involved include seizures and retarded development. In late childhood, adenoma sebaceum develops. The facial lesions are red to pink angiofibromas, that may be mistaken for acne. The mental functions deteriorate slowly. Patches of thickened skin may develop over the low back. There may be areas of the skin which have lost their pigmentation and appear lighter than the adjacent skin.
