Salivary Duct Stones

Overview of Salivary Duct Stones

overview

The salivary glands include the sublingual gland, the submandibular gland and the parotid gland. They all produce and release fluid and enzymes into the mouth the aid in digestion. Occasionally, the passage from the gland to the mouth can become blocked. This can occur from a stone that develops from materials dissolved in the saliva. When the stone obstructs the salivary gland duct, pain may occur. This may be much worse during eating, when additional amounts of saliva are released. Swelling of the gland and occasionally infections may develop.
