The mediastinum is the region between the two lung cavities. It contains the thymus gland, the heart, portions of the trachea, portions of the esophagus and many large vessels and lymph nodes. In pneumonmediastium, there is gas or air that is within these structures. Occasionally, the air trapped in the mediastinum can compress the vessels or heart, leading to life threatening conditions. Rupture of any of the aforementioned organs can lead to life threatening infections with acute mediastinitis.
Causes of Pneumomediastinum
There are three main causes of pneumomediastinum. They include perforation of the esophagus, trachea or bronchi. Perforation of the lung. And dissection of air, which is released into the subcutaneous spaces in the neck or abdomen, into the mediastinum.
Signs and Symptoms of Pneumomediastinum
Pneumomediastinum typically produces severe chest pain. The pain may radiate into the arms or neck. People affected may feel air trapped under the skin at the junction of the neck and chest.
