Lupus erythematosis was first recognized as a disorder of the skin. The name was given to differentiate this disorder from the skin changes found when tuberculosis affects the skin. The severity of the systemic disorder appears to be inversely related to the severity of the skin disorder. There are three forms of lupus affecting the skin: First, there is chronic cutaneous lupus. Second, there is acute cutaneous lupus and last, there is subacute cutaneous lupus.

Chronic cutaneous lupus is an autoimmune disorder. An inflammatory infiltrate is found in the skin.

Signs and Symptoms of Chronic Cutaneous Lupus

In the majority of people afflicted with chronic cutaneous lupus, the lesions form discrete red plaques. Their may be scales. The center of the lesion gradually heals. Initially the lesion appears to have increased pigmentation. However, by the time it has healed, the central portion has decreased pigmentation compared to the adjacent skin. The most common places that these lesions are found are the cheeks, forehead, nose and ears. Hair loss may occur and may be irreversible.
