The spleen occupies a position in the left upper abdomen. It is important in the immune and blood system. Blunt or penetrating abdominal trauma is the most common cause of injury. It is often injured in association with injuries to the lowermost ribs on the left side. Diseased or enlarged spleens may rupture spontaneously. Irrespective of the mechanism, rupture of the spleen can lead to severe blood loss in the abdominal cavity.

Blunt trauma is the leading cause of splenic rupture. Spontaneous rupture may occur, especially with infections mononucleosis and malaria.

Signs and Symptoms of Ruptured Spleen

Rupture of the spleen produces left upper abdominal pain. Irritation of the adjacent diaphragm, may produce left shoulder pain. Extensive bleeding in the abdomen leads to generalized abdominal pain and swelling. Shock may occur with rapid pulse, pallor and fatigue.
