An overgrowth of a breast lobule produces a fibroadenoma. The breast lobule is that part of the breast that produces milk. Causes of Fibroadenoma

There is not a specific etiology for the development of fibroadenomas. However, it is thought that sensitivity of breast tissue to female sex hormones is an important contributing factor.

Fibroadenomas usually produce a painless lump in the breast. They arise most commonly in the superior and outer part of the breast. Frequently, there is more than one lump. Occasionally, both breasts may be involved. In some cases, there may be generalized thickening of the breast tissue.
