Snoring is a disorder in which there is noisy breathing during sleep. The condition is most common in men, usually between 30 and 50 years of age. It may be a symptoms of more serious conditions such as sleep apnea. Being over-weight, chronic use of alcohol and smoking are all thought to be risk factors.

Causes of Snoring

The soft palate in that part of the roof of the mouth which does not have bone underneath it. Vibration of the soft palate leads to snoring. It occurs because of an obstruction or narrowoing of the nasopharynx. The nasopharynx is that part of the airway between the back of the nose and the throat. Sleeping on the back tends to amplify the symptoms. In patients who have sleep apnea, there are repeated episodes in which breathing is temporarily interrupted. Relaxation of the muscles of the nasopharynx may be the result of drinking alcohol or taking sedatives. Swelling of the nasopharynx can be caused by infection or irritation

Signs and Symptoms of Snoring

Noisy breathing during sleep is the primary symptom. In situations in which snoring is associated with sleep apnea, there are repeated episodes of temporary interruption of breathing during sleep.
