Gingival hyperplasia is a condition in which the gums enlarge and swell. There are various causes for this disorder. Poor oral hygiene is a risk factor.

Gingivitis is due to poor oral hygiene. Plaque and bacteria build up at the base of the teeth. Certain antihypertensive drugs, anticonvulsants, and immunosuppressive drugs may all lead to gingival hyperplasia. Hormonal changes, such as those occurring in pregnancy, may produce this disorder. Acute leukemia and scurvy are other disorders that produce hyperplasia of the gums.

Signs and Symptoms of Gingival Hyperplasia

Enlargement and swelling of the gums is the primary symptom. The gums may become inflamed and may easily bleed.
