Glomus jugulare tumors are red, vascular tumors. They develop from some progenitor nerve cells that usually occur near the base of the skull where the jugular vein develops. They develop immediately adjacent to the middle ear. These tumors are very slow growing, often increasing over 10-20 years.

Causes of Glomus Jugulare Tumor

The tumor arises from paraganglioma cells or glomus bodies, found near the outer walls of the jugular where it is formed.

Signs and Symptoms of Glomus Jugulare Tumor

The symptoms usually include loss of hearing, facial weakness, and problems swallowing. The tongue may become weakened and atrophic. A mass may also develop below and behind the ear.
