Pellagra is a common disease, especially in underdeveloped countries. In developed countries, the disease is mostly confined to the alcoholic population. The symptoms affect the skin, gastrointestinal tract, blood system and nervous system.
Causes of Pellagra
Pellagra may result from the deficiency of either nicotinic acid or the amino acid, tryptophan. The neurological symptoms are most likely due to pyridoxine deficiency.
Signs and Symptoms of Pellagra
Neurological symptoms are common in pellagra. They usually consist of difficulty sleeping, fatigue, nervousness and irritability. Problems with walking develop. Numbness, tingling and weakness may occur in the extremities.
