Myositis refers to a condition in which there is chronic inflammation of the muscles. When children are involved, it strikes most commonly between 5 and 15 years of age. Adults are most commonly affected between 30 and 60 years of age. Women are more commonly affected. Most cases progress slowly over many months or years.

The cause of myositis is unknown. It is thought to be an autoimmune disease.

Signs and Symptoms of Myositis

The main symptoms of myositis are muscle weakness. The muscles that surround the shoulder joints and hip joints are most commonly affected. Standing up, going up and down stairs and combing the hair are some tasks that become difficult. There might be fever, weight loss and tenderness of the muscles. Individuals may develop painful or swollen joints. Vasomotor changes can occur, where the fingers turn white then blue.
