Paratyphoid and typhoid are similar diseases. The are caused by bacteria that enter and multiply within the intestinal tract. They occur most commonly in areas of poor sanitation, where food and water become contaminated.

Causes of Paratyphoid Fever

Paratyphoid fever is caused by Salmonella paratyphi. It enters the intestinal tract where the bacteria multiply. The bacteria then spread through the blood to the spleen, gallbladder and liver.

Signs and Symptoms of Paratyphoid Fever

About one to two weeks following exposure to contaminated food and water the person begins to experience headache and fever. Abdominal pain and constipation occurs. Cough is common. A rash may develop on the trunk and intestinal bleeding may occur.
