Candidiasis, also known as moniliasis, is a fungal infection. Common areas of the body that are affected include the mouth, vagina, gastrointestinal tract, nails, and skin. The infection can spread from one moist areas of the body to another. Candida albicans, is usually present on the body. When other bacteria or fungus is killed, such as during the use of antibiotics, the candida fungus is allowed to grow without restriction. People whose immune system is abnormal, such as those afflicted with cancer or AIDS, commonly have fungal infections. In severe cases, the fungus may enter the blood stream and damage vital organs.
Causes of Candidiasis
Use of antibiotics may kill bacteria which usually keep the growth of fungus in control. Women who take birth control pills or who become pregnant have changes in the environment of the vagina that can lead to frequent fungal infections. Diseases such as diabetes produce environments where fungal infections are common. Also, cancer and AIDS directly affects the body's white cells. These cells can no longer fight off foreign organisms and the possibility of fungal infections in much higher. Moreover, since the infection may not be limited, a generalized infection may occur.
Signs and Symptoms of Candidiasis
The symptoms which develop depend on the part of the body which is affected. Oral infections produce creamy colored white discharge on the tongue and mouth. Vaginal infections produce thick, white discharge. Pain, inching, and redness occur in and around the vagina. Painful urination and painful sexual intercourse occur. Inflammation of the head of the penis may occur as balanitis. Skin infections produce itchy, red rash with flaky white patches. Widespread infection may be associated with fevers and chills. It can occur when indwelling catheters or intravenous lines are in place. Also, conditions which damage or destroy the immune system may allow this systemic infection.
