Trichothiodystrophy is a congenital form of hair shaft disorder. It can appear in several different forms. It leads to the production of abnormal, brittle hair. Other structures, including the teeth, eyes and nails may be involved with this process. In more serious cases, it can lead to ichthyosis, impaired growth and mental retardation.

Trichothiodystrophy is a genetic disorder. The exact cause of the disorder is unknown.

Signs and Symptoms of Hair Shaft Disorder

Due to the hair being so brittle in this disorder, once it emerges from the skin it is often fractures. This leads to short, sparse hair appearance. There is often photosensitivity of the skin. Cataracts may develop in the eyes. There may be problems with the nails producing onchodystrophy.
