More than 25% of all pregnancies end in miscarriage. In threatened abortion, the fetus is alive and the cervix, or opening between the uterus and the vagina, remains closed. There is some vaginal bleeding. Usually there is not any pain. Often the pregnancy will continue to full term.

Causes of Threatened Abortion

Most miscarriages are the result of genetic abnormalities in the fetus. Later miscarriages may occur from a weak cervix or a uterine fibroid. Severe systemic disease can lead to miscarriage. Smoking, alcohol use and drug use have increased incidence of precipitating a miscarriage.

Signs and Symptoms of Threatened Abortion

Threatened abortions usually occur sometime during the first 24 weeks of pregnancy. Vaginal bleeding or spotting occurs. Although usually painless, there may be some lower abdominal or pelvic pain.
