Trachoma is an eye infection that may lead to loss of vision. It leads to damage to the cornea or transparent part of the eye. It occurs most commonly in children and in areas with poor hygiene. Trachoma is one of the world's main causes of blindness. It appears more commonly in hot, dry countries with poor sanitation.

Causes of Trachoma

Trachoma is caused by the bacterium Chlamydia trachomatis. It is usually spread to the eyes by direct contact with contaminated hands, clothing or through contact with infected flies.

Signs and Symptoms of Trachoma

Irritation and redness of the eye occurs first. There is a discharge of pus from the eye. A feeling of a foreign body in the eye occurs. Repeated infections lead to scaring of eyelids, where the eyelids are twisted inwards. Blurred vision or loss of vision may occur.
