Tularemia is principally a disease of wild animals. Human infections usually occur through transmission with biting insects. The illness is varcharacterized by ulceration at the site of the bite. There is swelling of the local lymph nodes. Pneumonia commonly occurs.

Causes of Tularemia

Francisella tularensis is the bacillus that is responsible for tularemia. It is commonly spread to humans via insect bites from infected insects. The organism may spread directly through the air to the lungs, where pneumonia may occur.

Signs and Symptoms of Tularemia

Tularemia is usually heralded by the sudden onset of fever, chills and headache. Often, there are joint and muscle aches and pains. An ulcer may form where an insect bite transmitted the disease. Swelling and pain in the lymph nodes adjacent to the area where the bite occurred commonly occurs. Cough, sore throat and diarrhea are more common features when children are infected with the organism.
