The urethra is the passage that connects the bladder to the outside of the body. Scarring in or around the urethra can develop which leads to varying degrees of obstruction of urine flow. The scarring can develop from invasive procedures such as bladder catheterization, prostate or bladder surgery. Infections, such as gonorrhea or non-gonococcal urethritis, is probably the most common cause of urethral strictures.

The most common cause of urethral stricture is scarring from infections. The most common infection is gonorrhea and non-gonococcal urethritis. Injuries to the urethra from procedures can lead to scarring. In men, deformity of the erect penis can lead to urethral strictures.

Signs and Symptoms of Urethral Stricture

The primary symptoms or urethral stricture are painful and difficult urination. Poor urine flow is present. People often experience the sensation that the bladder remains full, even after urinating. In men, deformity or curvature of the penis can occur. There may also be painful ejaculation.
