Varicocele

Overview of Varicocele

overview

An enlargement of one or more veins within the scrotum forms a varicocele. When veins become defective, blood may pool within them. Varicocele's are common, affecting about 10% of men. They are occasionally associated with infertility in men. Due to the venous drainage of the testicles, they are more apt to develop in the left testicle.

Causes of Varicocele

causes

Weak or defective valves in the veins which serve the testicle are the most common cause of the disorder. Much less frequently, a tumor within the scrotum or along the course of the veins draining the testicles may occur. This can lead to increased pressure and engorgement of the veins within the scrotum.

Signs and Symptoms of Varicocele

signs and symptoms

The most common symptoms is a painless swelling of lump in the left testicle. When lying down, the pressure in the veins is decreased and the lump may disappear. It may feel like a bag of worms. Excessive exercise or hot weather may aggravate the symptoms.
