Rhabdomyolysis is a destruction of the muscle cells. It occurs from vigorous exercise or seizures. It can result in the excretion of myoglobin in the urine. The myoglobin can damage the kidneys and result in renal failure.

Rhabdomyolysis is seen with multiple trauma in which there is direct injury to many muscles. Very vigorous exercise can lead to damaged muscles. Surgery can lead to rhabdomylosis, particularly when a tourniquet is used for a long time on a extremity. Prolonged seizures may produce rhabdomyolysis.

Signs and Symptoms of Rhabdomyolysis

Weakness and fever occur. Muscle rigidity and tenderness occurs. The urine appears dark and there may be reduced urine output.
