Pelvic inflammatory disease occurs more commonly in sexually active adolescent women. It is also more common in women with multiple sexual partners. Various forms of infections of the cervix and uterus can all lead to infections of the ovaries and the fallopian tubes. Ovarian cysts, ectopic pregnancy, torsion of an ovary and ruptured ovarian cysts can all produce similar symptoms.

Salpingitis represents infection spread from the endocervix. It is frequently sexually transmitted.

Signs and Symptoms of Salpingitis

Pain in the lower abdomen is the most common symptom. It usually occurs on one side. Low back pain may also occur. Activities that jar the body, such as jogging, may increase the symptoms. About half of the people who contract salpingitis will have purulent vaginal discharge. Somewhat less than half of the people infected will have fever.
