Perinephric and Renal abscesses are rare. They most commonly occur secondary to urinary tract infections. Usually, they are preceded by signs and symptoms to pyelonephritis. When the infection produces an abscess in the space around the kidney, a perinephric abscess develops. Kidney stones and other structural problems in the kidney represent risk factors.
Causes of Perinephric Abscess
The most common cause of perinephric abscess is urinary tract infection. The bacteria may spread into the substance of the kidney, forming small abscesses that rupture into the space around the kidney. Extension of the perinephric abscess up to the diaphragm and down to the pelvis may occur. Local obstruction to urine flow, such as with kidney stones, trauma or surgery, may be precipitating causes.
Signs and Symptoms of Perinephric Abscess
The symptoms associated with perinephric or renal abscesses are not specific. People often have some degree of fever. There is pain in the back or flank that may spread to the groin or leg. Often, there are symptoms of pyelonephritis prior to the development of the abscess. These usually include flank or back pain, fever and chills, burning and frequent urination. There may be a history of kidney stones.
