There are two major forms of alopecia, or hair loss. These are scarring and non-scarring. In scarring alopecia, there is inflammation, scarring and loss of hair follicles. Folliculitis decalvans usually produces scarring alopecia. The active lesions in folliculitis decalvans are perifollicular pustules. These most commonly are caused by staphylococcal infections. These people may have other forms of acnes or joint pain.

There are often pustules surrounding small hair follicles. There are usually circumscribed areas of hair loss. There may be joint pains associated with this disorder. Also, other forms of acne may be present.
