Discitis

Overview of Discitis

overview

Discitis describes conditions in which the intervertebral disc is infected. These infections can develop through blood born bacteria being delivered to the disc space. Infections can spread from adjacent infections. Diagnostic testing can inadvertently introduce bacteria into the disc space.

Causes of Discitis

causes

Disc space infections are produced when the disc space is inoculated with bacteria. This can occur in a variety of ways as described above.

Signs and Symptoms of Discitis

signs and symptoms

Fever and chills occurs early in the course of disc space infections. Local pain occurs and increases as the infection progresses. Muscle spasms develop in the areas adjacent to the infection. If the infection spreads into the adjacent spinal canal, either compression or inflammation of the spinal cord and nerve roots can occur. This can lead to varying degrees of weakness, numbness, tingling, urinary, and bowel dysfunction.
