Bacterial infection within the small intestine produces cholera. It usually occurs in epidemics. Most commonly the disease is associated with poor sanitation. The illness begins suddenly with nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. The diarrhea becomes watery and profuse and may lead to dehydration.

Causes of Cholera

The bacterium Vibrio Cholerae is the agent responsible for cholera infections. It is usually spread through water and food contaminated with this organism.

Signs and Symptoms of Cholera

Exposure to conditions of poor sanitation is the usual background for the outbreak of epidemic cholera. The rapid onset of nausea and vomiting occurs. Profuse, watery diarrhea may lead to dehydration. Malaise and weakness rapidly develop.
