Following over dosage with aspirin, the rate and depth of breathing is increased. Salicylates also affect metabolism, leading to acidosis. They also interfere with synthesis of clotting factors in the liver and permanently affect the ability of the platelets to help in blood clotting.
Causes of Aspirin Poisoning
Aspirin produces its symptoms through several mechanisms. The respiratory centers of the brain become more sensitive, leading to rapid respiration. The ability to conduct metabolism and produce energy is impaired, which leads to the production of ketoacidosis. This condition further raises the respiratory rate. Aspirin directly leads to decreased production of clotting factors in the liver. The platelets react with aspirin products which attach to them, permanently altering their ability to function normally. Vomiting, sweating and dehydration may lead to renal failure.
Signs and Symptoms of Aspirin Poisoning
Several hours after an over dosage of aspirin, the respiratory rate is increased. The person may develop vomiting, sweating, and a rapid heart rate. There is usually ringing in the ears. With progression of the problems the person may become lethargic and confused. In extreme cases, seizures and coma have occurred as well as progressive shortness of breath. There may be excessive bleeding and easy bruising.
