Cardiac or myocardial contusion usually results from blunt trauma to the chest. Although this is the commonest traumatic injury of the heart, other conditions can occur simultaneously. These include rupture of the heart valves, rupture of the aorta can cardiac tamponade.

Causes of Cardiac Contusion

Cardiac contusion is caused by bruising of the heart muscle. This may be mild or severe. In severe cases, fatal arrhythmias may develop.

Signs and Symptoms of Cardiac Contusion

Aside from external trauma to the chest, there may be no symptoms. The individual may experience irregular heart beats. Fluid or blood may collect in the cavity around the heart, the pericardium. This may produce chest pain and shortness of breath.
