Macular Degeneration

Overview of Macular Degeneration

overview

The macula is the area of maximal vision in the retina. In some people, the cells which form this portion of the retina begin to degenerate in the late 50's or 60's. Since the macula is responsible for fine vision, reading and seeing fine details is affected. If macular function is completely lost, only peripheral vision remains. The disorder is usually painless and usually affects one eye at a time. However, both eyes may eventually become involved.

Causes of Macular Degeneration

causes

The cause of macular degeneration is unknown. Risk factors include far-sightedness, cigarette smoking and family history of this disease.

Signs and Symptoms of Macular Degeneration

signs and symptoms

The central vision is affected. It becomes increasingly blurred, with blank spots. Images viewed by this part of the retina may appear distorted. It becomes increasingly difficulty to distinguish colors or to read or do fine work.
