Infection of the testicles produces orchitis. The disorder is varcharacterized by swelling and pain in the testicles. The most common cause in adolescents and young adults is mumps. About 25% of these people will develop orchitis within several days. Testicular atrophy may develop. About two thirds of cases involve only one testicle. Although infertility is uncommon, it is more common when both testicles are involved.
Causes of Orchitis
The most common cause of orchitis, particularly in adolescents and young adults is the mumps virus. Infections of the prostate and epididymis can spread to the testicles. Sexually transmitted diseases, such as chlamydia and syphilis can affect the testicle.
Signs and Symptoms of Orchitis
Pain, swelling and tenderness of the testicle occurs. This may be unilateral or may involve both testicles. Fever may develop. Painful, swollen lymph nodes in the groin may, also, occur.
