Over long periods of time, substances may precipitate from the urine and form stones within the bladder. Often, several stones may form at one time. This abnormality occurs much more frequently in older men. Obstruction of the bladder may occur, leading to enlargement of the bladder and damage to the kidney's. Pain and intermittent obstruction may permit urinating only in certain positions.
Causes of Stones, Urinary Bladder
Chronic dehydration produces concentrated urine. This had a greater probability to produce bladder stones. In men with enlarged prostates, stones are seen to originate in the bladder or other portions of the urinary tract. The chronic use of catheters, chronic urinary tract infections as well as neurological disorders affecting the function of the bladder can all lead to bladder stones. Certain diets, such as those high in oxalic acid, found in spinach, leafy vegetables and coffee may lead to bladder stones. Similarly, diets low in protein may precipitate bladder stones.
Signs and Symptoms of Stones, Urinary Bladder
Interruption of the urinary stream as well as the ability to urinate in only certain positions are common attributes of bladder stones. The frequent urge to urinate and the ability to urinate only small amounts is also seen. Pain may occur in the lower abdomen and back. Blood may be found in the urine and occasionally fever develops
