Herpes simplex virus causes a number of disorders varcharacterized by painful blisters on the skin and the mucus membranes. Commonly, they occur around the mouth and lips and around the genitals. The virus remains dormant in the nerves and may become reactivated at any time. Physical and emotional stress may serve to reactivate these disorders. Chronic diseases that adversely affects the immune system may increase the risk for developing herpes simplex infections.
Herpes infections are classified as HSV 1 and 2. HSV 2 is usually sexually transmitted. Both of these disorders tend to recur. These disorders are infectious.

The cause of this disorder is Herpes simplex virus. There are two forms that produce these infections, type 1 and type 2.

Signs and Symptoms of Herpes Simplex Virus Infection

Pain developing in an area of the skin, usually around the lips or genitals, precedes the onset of a rash. The rash forms small lumps which may ulcerate and become further infected. Sometimes, pain may persist after the rash has disappeared.
