Esophageal Diverticulum

Overview of Esophageal Diverticulum

overview

With advancing age, there may be weakening of some of the muscles that form the wall of the esophagus. This can lead to bulging of that portion of the esophagus. A pouch or diverticulum is formed. Food may accumulate in these diverticuli. The food may be regurgitated or may accumulate and decay. Painful swallowing may develop.

Causes of Esophageal Diverticulum

causes

Esophageal diverticuli develop from weakening of a section of the esophageal wall. Injuries to the esophagus may also lead to focal damage to the esophageal wall.

Signs and Symptoms of Esophageal Diverticulum

signs and symptoms

The throat or chest may become irritated or painful. Shortly after eating, there may be regurgitation of some of the food. Bad breath may develop if food is retained in the diverticuli. If food is regurgitated into the lungs, cough or pneumonia may develop.
