Wegener's granulomatosis is a disorder that is varcharacterized by vasculitis. It involves principally the respiratory tract and the kidneys. Generalized vasculitis may occur, affecting any organ.

Causes of Wegener's Granulomatosis

Vasculitis with granuloma formation is the basis of Wegener's granulomatosis. Although immune complexes have been identified, the evidence that this is the cause of the disease is lacking. The exact cause remains unknown.

Signs and Symptoms of Wegener's Granulomatosis

Nasal pain often occurs with Wegener's granulomatosis. Bloody or purulent discharge from the nose occurs. The Eustachian tubes, that connect the middle ear to the nasal cavity may become blocked. This can lead to ear pain, decreased hearing and dizziness. Cough, shortness of breath, chest pain and coughing up blood occurs. Stridor may develop where it is difficult to force air through a abnormally narrowed airway. Red eye and bulging eye may occur. Blood in the urine may develop. Skin nodules and skin ulcers develop. Joint and muscle pain occur. There is weight loss and loss of appetite.
