Wernicke-Koraskoff syndrome is a disorder of the brain caused by deficiency of vitamin B1. It usually leads to dementia, difficulties with walking and abnormal movements of the eyes. Coma and death may rapidly occur. The disease tends to be more common in males and in people who chronically use excessive amounts of alcohol.

The onset of symptoms is variable is Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome. They may begin after heavy bouts of drinking. Double vision often occurs. The gait become unstable and the person may not be able to walk unassisted. Confusion begins and gradually worsens. Severe memory loss may develop. When not promptly treated, coma and death may occur.
