Xanthomas are yellow bumps that occur beneath the skin. The bumps have well defined margins. Although they can appear in any region of the body, they most commonly appear over joints or tendons. They often appear where the skin is subjected to pressure such as in the knees, elbows, hands or feet. Xanthomas are generally 2-6 centimeters in size. They are usually flat.

Causes of Xanthoma

Xanthomas are a symptom of some type of underlying disorder. These are usually metabolic disorders that allow the fat concentration in the blood to increase.
The diseases most commonly associated with this disorder include diabetes, biliary cirrhosis, cancer and some inherited diseases that affect the metabolism of fat.

Signs and Symptoms of Xanthoma

Xanthomas are soft, fatty lumps that appear under the skin. They usually have a yellowish color and are flat. They range in size from 2-6 centimeters. They may occur in any area of the body.
