Orbital abscess forms adjacent to the bony wall of the orbit. Swelling of the eyeball may develop. Pus may spontaneously drain through the eyelid. These disorders are most commonly associated with sinusitis.

Causes of Orbital Abscess

The most common cause of orbital abscess is underlying sinusitis. Other disorders, such as trauma to the eye, blood borne bacteria and cellulitis may lead to orbital abscess.

Signs and Symptoms of Orbital Abscess

Protrusion of one eyeball occurs. There is fever and perhaps chills. They eyeball may become displaced in the orbit. Double vision is common. There may be tenderness and swelling, particularly on the inner portion of the orbit. Pus may drain spontaneously through the eyelid. There is moderate to severe eye pain.
