The nasopharynx is the passage which connects the nose with the throat. A cancerous growth arising from the tissue in this region may produce a nasopharyngeal carcinoma. The disease is more common amongst Chinese people. Smoking, excessive alcohol use, inhaling certain dusts and toxins may increase the risk of this type of cancer.

Signs and Symptoms of Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma

Initially, nasopharyngeal cancer may not produce any symptoms. When symptoms do occur, they may be local or related to spread of the cancer to other areas. Repeated nosebleeds may occur. Obstruction of one side of the nose and painful swallowing may also occur. People suffering from this disorder are usually over 50 years of age. Nasopharyngeal cancer may cause facial pain and swelling. There may be loss of hearing, loss of smell and earache. The voice may change or be hoarse and lumps in the neck may occur.
