A mucocele is a fluid filled mass which occurs within one of the paranasal sinuses. As the mass enlarges, they may destroy local tissues, including bones. The mass may become infected. They may erode the skull and lead to infections within the brain.
Causes of Mucocele
Anything that damages the lining of the sinus can lead to a mucocele. This is a portion of the sinus lining which has become walled off. Secretions within this area cannot drain and gradually accumulate. Fractures of the sinus, repeated sinus infections and surgery of the sinuses can all lead to the development of mucoceles.
Signs and Symptoms of Mucocele
Pain and tenderness over the involved sinus occurs. The skin over the sinus may appear red and warm. Fever and chills may develop, if the mucocele becomes infected. Erosion of the skull base can lead to infections within the brain. These can consist of epidural abscess, brain abscess and meningitis. Local pain, fever, stiff neck and neurological symptoms may occur.
