Peritonsillar abscess is also known as Quinsy. This infection develops in the back of the throat, around the tonsils. The infection can spread up and down in the throat, eventually involving the membranes surrounds the heart and lungs. The swelling can become large enough to interfere with breathing. Surgical drainage of the abscess is often required.

Signs and Symptoms of Peritonsillar Abscess

History of tonsillitis is common. A rapidly worsening sore throat associated with pain and difficulty swallowing is seen. Drooling may occur, as is becomes more difficult to swallow the secretions of the mouth. Fever and headache occur. Swelling of the neck and painful, swollen lymph nodes in the neck occur.
